Attend the Tale of Danny Tanner - A Full House Musical
Imagine an alternate universe where Bob Saget has been given free reign to rewrite the TV series Full House for HBO. Then imagine they sent it back to him, asked him make it into a musical, and also add a bit more savagery and vulgarity.
This is what writers Chris Gorton and Katie Johnston-Smith have done for their production of Attend the Tale of Danny Tanner - A Full House Musical at Gorilla Tango Theatre and it's hilarious. If you grew up in the late '80s and early '90s, you can't help but know the show. You may not remember that widowed father Danny Tanner's wife was killed by a drunk driver.
In A Full House Musical, Danny, played by Rob Speer takes a yearly detour from his white bread life in San Francisco to avenge his wife's death. He stalks his drunken prey outside the local Cheesecake Factory. Speer plays him very well with a very dark humor and an obsessive compulsive cleaning disorder.
Tanner's three daughters are played with unhinged exaggeration by Katie Johnston-Smith as DJ Tanner, Meghan M. Hillmeyer as Stephanie Tanner, and Ali Keirn as Michelle Tanner.
You can watch the musical on Saturdays at 7:30pm, from July 14 till july 28, 2012 at Gorilla Tango Theatre, 1919 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. Tickets are $15.
